A couple of weeks ago, a local business posted an advertisement for its Halloween event which was created using AI. The post sparked a conversation on social media about AI tools and graphic design for some people wondering if they need a designer if they have an AI to make designs. I don’t want to add to the noise with this discussion, I will instead pivot, and discuss how AI fits in with why design will remain valuable and needed.
AI-generated design example lacking brand cohesion

As you can see, this attempt at creating a professional graphic to go on this blog didn’t hit the nail on the head.

The First Step is Understand What Is, and Is Not, AI Designed for

AI is NOT going to replace designers. It is NOT that sophisticated. Think of it as using AI as a tool. Many small business owners use AI tools because they are readily available and affordable. AI tools can develop some quick concepts and ideas, but AI NEEDS a designer to develop an intentional, strategically designed, outcome. AI will not understand your brand’s needs, provide the right file type for scale and print. In short, AI will NEVER replace the creative human thought that brings your brand forward.

Education, not Judgment, is the Function in our Work

Some businesses are using AI for design because it is their only option, and that is okay. It’s not our job to judge them, it is our job to educate them. We can provide the insights to businesses when AI is a useful front end to design and when they should pursue a professional to create a truly one-of-a-kind modern and credible outcome. If we strive to educate and not judge, we gain trust, and trust is what brings business back when in mode for a more professional and polished brand.

The Important Factors of the Human Element

For demonstration, I asked AI to create some sort of visual to share with this post. What came out was matching colors, mismatched fonts, and no real visual hierarchy. This visual was a perfect representation of why tools cannot create a designer. Tools create, they do NOT design intentionally. The most effective tools do not develop trust and the cohesive image one would expect to last.

Ultimately, AI will never take the place of the designers who lead with value of strategy and experience. We advise clients to make smart and unique marketing, and that will never change, and also AI could never replicate.

Key Takeaways:

  • AI is a helpful tool, not a replacement for professional design.
  • Small businesses may turn to AI due to accessibility, and that’s okay.
  • Professional designers bring strategy, intentionality, and experience that AI cannot replicate.
  • Our job as creatives is to educate, not judge, those who are using AI to get by.
  • Design is more than visuals — it’s trust, consistency, and brand alignment.
  • Tools can generate graphics, but only humans can design with purpose.
  • Designers who focus on strategy, clarity, and guidance remain essential.
