A logo is more than a visual mark. It’s often the first impression someone has of your business, and it should communicate who you are at a glance.
If you’ve ever wondered what the logo design process actually looks like when working with a professional, this post explains my logo design process step by step and how I help small businesses create logos and whole branding systems that reflect their personality, values, and goals.
This is a collaborative process, and you’ll have input at every stage so your final logo feels intentional, personal, and aligned with your brand.

What Is the Logo Design Process?
The logo design process is a structured approach to creating a visual identity that represents your business clearly and consistently. A professional process includes discovery, concept development, refinement, and final delivery, ensuring your logo works across every platform it will be used on.
Below, I’ll walk you through my logo design process so you know exactly what to expect from start to finish.
We’ll follow the logo design process with visuals from Sifdata, who I worked with to create a logo.
Step 1: Discovery & Logo Design Survey
This first step in the logo design process helps me understand your business, audience, and visual preferences before any design work begins.
Before I start working toward creating your company’s visual identity, I share a logo design survey with you to gather more information about your company. This information includes goals, who your target audience is, the aesthetic you’re working to portray, where your logo will be used, and some additional background questions that help me design the perfect logo.
During this phase of the process, we invite our clients to share logo styles they like and offer color suggestions and fonts that inspire you. We’ll use this information to create your overall look and feel. And if you don’t have any concepts you like, we can present you with some different styles and ideas to get you thinking.

Step 2: Logo Concept Development
During this stage of the logo design process, I create initial concepts that reflect your brand direction and business goals.
Once we have a firm grasp on your business and your goals, we go to work creating concept logos. Depending on which package you choose, I’ll present either 1 or 3 concepts in black and white first. We’ll then narrow down our concepts to a few options that we think are the best fit for your company.
Then, we’ll work through your revisions to these concepts to tweak the final concept you choose that will ultimately become your company logo.

Step 3: Refinement, Revisions & Final Logo Design
- Feedback & narrowing concepts:Now that we have a few concepts we believe will encapsulate your company’s brand, we reach out to discuss the concepts with you. At this point, you can share what you like and don’t like about the concepts and any additional feedback you have. We’ll narrow the concepts down to just one, which we’ll then further develop.
- Refining the selected logo:The second step is to present your team with an edited version of the concept and perhaps a few variations on it to make it just right.
- Exploring color applications:
Finally, we’ll explore color applications for your logo to make it pop and stand out in a crowded marketplace.
What Makes This Logo Design Process Different
What makes my logo design process unique is the level of collaboration involved. You’re not handing off your brand and waiting weeks for a surprise. Instead, you’re involved at each stage, providing feedback that helps shape a logo you feel confident using everywhere your business shows up.
