When we think of a “graphic designer”, many things might come to mind. “Logos”. “Branding”. “Print Design”. “Websites”. Just name off a few buzzwords. But what are the actual key responsibilities of a freelance graphic designer?

But did you know that working with an experienced freelance designer is almost the same as dealing with an agency, but at a portion of the expense? Self-employed designers have been around the block a time or two. We are ready to share our expertise by offering excellent customer service and a brand identity system, high-end brochure, or website design that you’ll be smitten with.

1. Designers are Project Managers

  • Freelance designers are not just heads-down doing the design work. They are simultaneously juggling clients and deadlines.
  • We are responsible for timely-check ins with clients, and encouraging clients to maintain a reasonable schedule for work reviews so that the project doesn’t stall.
  • We manage expectations on a daily basis, and seek to over-deliver whenever given the opportunity.

2. Designers are Art Directors

  • We do not have 20 sets of eyes over our work like in an Agency Setting. Sometimes, freelancers do bounce designs off of fellow designers in critique groups or networking groups like Freelancing Females.
  • We are often responsible for all of the concepting, critiquing, and presenting of our own work to clients. In Agency settings these duties often go to the art director or creative director.

3. Designers are Accountants

  • Freelance designers are responsible for all of their own numbers. From writing a proposal to all invoicing, and setting up recurring retainers. We do it all.

4. Designers are Strategists

  • Graphic designers do make incredible designs for their clients. But did you also know that there is a TON of research, planning, and thought that goes into each design that you see?

When we begin work on your branding, designers often do a discovery call and/or request a survey of information about your business. From there, we research competitors, design trends, and your target demographic to come up with concepts that not only become beautiful logos, but will also reach and convert the RIGHT audience so that they will become your paying customers.

5. Designers are Marketers

  • As an experienced freelance graphic designer, I have worked with many small business owners and marketers over time. We know a LOT about the marketing process and can offer you valuable suggestions on how to make your marketing budget work for you.
  • We have large networks of marketers and can make recommendations. If we don’t know how to do it, we probably know someone who can.

6. Designers are your Partners

As a graphic and website designer that hs worked with many small business owners over my career, I can assure you that I want my clients to succeed. I want you to meet all of your business goals and more!
There is absolutely nothing better than seeing my work on a busy storefront window.
