Ecommerce Web Design Case Study

From idea to brick-and-mortar DIY craft bar with an e-commerce website

The Craftery is a new concept opening in the popular area of NULU in Louisville, Kentucky. The client needed full branding services, Ecommerce web design, print and digital marketing collateral, color palette for the shop, interior and exterior signage, and stencils that the crafts will be made out of.

Creative Process

In collaboration with the client, I helped create a welcoming, modern look for the brand to help attract people hanging out at the popular breweries and shops in NULU in person, and to convert visitors to sales via their ecommerce website online.

Designing the Logo

When I’m working with clients on a logo, I send a logo design survey to learn about their goals, target audience, aesthetic, where their logo will be used, and other questions that help me with their design. The Craftery DIY Bar was looking to strike a unique balance of vintage yet modern.

The Three Step Logo Process

Designing the logo included three steps:

  1. I created many initial concepts that fit within the style the client was looking for and finalized the best of the group.
  2. Then, I presented the client with concepts. We discussed the client’s feedback to decide what to incorporate into the design.
  3. Once the overall design was finalized, we explored incorporating color into the logo. The client decided to use her full-color palette interchangeably in her logos and her brand guide.

The Final Logo

The final logo had two variants, one in the circle and one without the colored circle. These logos variants offer the client the versatility they need to use the logo in different places and still allow it to look great and grab the viewer’s attention. From there, I created a full brand guide with brand colors, logo use cases, typography, logo specification and usage guidelines. Once the guidelines were in place, I created additional marketing collateral and signage, including a full e-commerce website, postcards, building signage, and more.

The Craftery new ecommerce website on wordpress

A website design that went from reserving in-person appointments to shopping onlinee

We launched the website in three phases to allow the client to gradually establish a web presence and get the necessary information out there to start building an audience and sharing about what they do. The first phase was a simple landing page with basic information. Next, we planned to launch a full informational website with reservation capabilities, but the coronavirus pandemic delayed The Craftery DIY Bar opening date. I suggested that the client open an e-commerce site where she sold craft kits online that people would have originally done in the location. I built a full e-commerce website and went live within weeks so that the client could bring in revenue while she waited to open. The final phase of the project is in progress. It will be a full website with reservation capabilities and a large e-commerce website to ship craft kits all over the USA. Stay tuned for an upate!
